My highest aim is to keep my top ranking websites user friendly, and clutter free. So far, all links that are anywhere on any of my 12 web sites were hand picked. Because of their distinct audience, and high visitor numbers I wouldn't like to suddenly see bad or unwanted links.

I am considering joining linkdiy.com but would like to hear more how present users are keeping their links relevant and "clean".

That's what we try to do next!
Any suggestion?
We are thinking use a relevant keyword for each site, Then the sites only link with those site which have the same keyword.
